Preseli MP Stephen Crabb has urged the UK Government to support a Pembrokeshire-based joint venture which looks to harness the Celtic Sea’s untapped wind potential.
Blue Gem Wind, a joint venture between global energy giant Total and Simply Blue Energy, are based in Pembroke Dock and are looking to establish an offshore wind turbine presence in the Celtic Sea. The project could potentially deliver over 3,000 jobs and £682m in supply chain opportunities for Wales and Cornwall by 2030.
A number of Pembrokeshire’s companies have the necessary construction and engineering experience to be involved in this project, and Blue Gem Wind could help provide an economic boost to the county while helping with the UK’s net-zero carbon target.
Speaking in Parliament at Wales Questions, Stephen Crabb urged the Minister to ensure the Treasury and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy are aware of this project and give it its full support.
Commenting outside the Chamber, Stephen Crabb said:
“Pembrokeshire desperately needs new projects to improve our economy and create better jobs. Blue Gem Wind is exactly the kind of project we need to see flourish, a renewable energy project which utilises the skills already found in the county.
“We need to look at green ways that can help our economy recover and I hope with the backing of global energy company Total, Blue Gem Wind can really make waves in economic recovery and renewable energy.”
Stephen Crabb has long spoken up for the need to develop green energy in the county and last Friday (July 10) he meet with members of Pembrokeshire’s Friends of the Earth to discuss a green economic recovery plan.
