The award-winning drama-based education programme, Bin It!, which educates students about protecting the environment from litter and responsible behaviour, visited Ysgol Caer Elen On Friday as part of its annual nationwide tour. Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, was among the audience members alongside 140 students aged 11-12 years old.
The Bin It! tour, developed and delivered by specialist education consultancy Rapport, supported by Mars Wrigley UK, and profiled in the Litter Strategy for England, encourages young people across the nation to work together to make a lasting change to local areas and keep their environment tidy. Since 2006, the programme has visited over 1,100 schools in the UK, reaching almost 250,000 students.
The Bin It! team of actors aims to engage and educate young people, encouraging pupils to make positive choices about the responsible disposal of litter in their environment and urging them to take pride in their community. The programme has a proven record of success, with results from the last tour showing that 76% of students felt that they should reduce litter in their school after watching the roadshow.
For those who can’t experience the tour first-hand, Bin It! resource packs including teachers’ notes, lesson plans, films, activity cards and posters are available from biniteducation.com. Free to all primary and secondary schools, these resources have been designed with cross-curricular content making them applicable to a variety of subjects.
Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, said:
“I am delighted to learn about the Bin It! initiative taking place in schools and enjoyed attending the anti-littering performance at Ysgol Caer Elen. Litter is a very important issue in our society and working with young people is essential to raise awareness and encourage responsible behaviour. We all have a role to play in keeping Pembrokeshire litter-free so that it remains a beautiful place to work and live.”
David Henderson, Senior Manager Public Affairs, Mars Wrigley UK, said: “Bin It! has been an incredibly successful programme to date. We’ve been committed to developing a range of resources over the past year and are looking forward to reaching out to even more young people, reinforcing our messages around littering, instilling responsible behaviour and urging them to take pride in and look after their local communities and environments.”
